- Adding a Newborn Baby to OSHC
Adding a family member to your OSHC is no longer something you can sort out “later”. From 2026, the Department of Home Affairs is tightening compliance checks on dependent visa holders, and even a short gap in health cover can trigger a visa cancellation warning. Whether you’re bringing a spouse over on a subsequent entrant visa or your baby was born in Australia, you need to update your policy before the arrival date (or within a strict window after birth). This guide walks through the exact steps for each major OSHC provider, the real costs in 2027, and the document chain you’ll need — so you don’t waste a morning on hold or end up with a rejected claim.
Check Your Eligibility and Visa Conditions
Before you touch your policy, confirm that your dependent is actually eligible to be added. On a Student visa (subclass 500), only these family members qualify:
- Your spouse or de facto partner (including same-sex partners)
- Your child, or your partner’s child, who is under 18 and not married
- A child over 18 if they are financially dependent on you (rare, and requires extra evidence)
Every dependent must hold their own valid Student visa (subclass 500) as a subsequent entrant, or be added to your visa before travelling. OSHC must be in place for the day they arrive in Australia, not the day they apply. If you’re adding a spouse who is already in Australia on a different visa, check that they have switched to a dependent 500 visa — OSHC insurers will reject the addition without a matching visa grant notice.
A quick decision tree often helps:
- Dependent is overseas and hasn’t applied for a visa yet? Apply for Subsequent Entrant visa first, then purchase OSHC to start on the intended arrival date.
- Dependent already holds a Student 500 visa as a subsequent entrant? Add them to your OSHC policy immediately, backdated if necessary to their arrival date.
- Newborn baby born in Australia? You have 2 months from the date of birth to add them without facing waiting periods on the baby’s own conditions.
- Partner on a Graduate visa (subclass 485)? OSHC is the wrong product. They need a separate Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) policy. Do NOT add them to your OSHC.
Understand OSHC Family Cover: What You Get and What It Costs in 2027
When you add a spouse or child, your single policy automatically converts to a couples or family policy. The upgrade isn’t just an extra line item; your minimum coverage requirements change, and the monthly premium jumps. All five OSHC insurers — Bupa, Medibank, Allianz Care, nib, and AHM — structure family cover as either a “couples” (2 adults) or “family” (1 or 2 adults + children) product.
Key coverage points that stay the same:
- GP visits (MBS fee covered at 100% of the Medicare rebate)
- Specialist consultations (85% of MBS fee)
- Public hospital inpatient treatment (100% of MBS in a shared ward)
- Prescription medicines under the PBS (up to $50 per item, with some limits)
- Ambulance transport
The 12‑month waiting period for pre‑existing conditions and pregnancy still applies when a new person joins, unless they’ve already served that time on another Australian OSHC policy. In 2027, waiting periods are fully portable between OSHC providers — so if your spouse has had their own OSHC for 8 months, they only need to serve the remaining 4 months after switching to your policy. You’ll need to request a Transfer Certificate from the previous insurer and give it to the new one.
Here’s what couples and family premiums typically look like in 2027, based on standard comprehensive cover (averaged monthly cost, AUD, rounded):
- Bupa
- Couples: $210–$240/month depending on excess
- Family (1 adult + children): $220–$260/month
- Family (2 adults + children): $280–$330/month
- Medibank
- Couples: $195–$225/month
- Family (1 adult + children): $200–$240/month
- Family (2 adults + children): $260–$300/month
- Allianz Care
- Couples: $200–$230/month
- Family (1 adult + children): $210–$245/month
- Family (2 adults + children): $270–$310/month
- nib
- Couples: $185–$215/month
- Family (1 adult + children): $190–$225/month
- Family (2 adults + children): $250–$290/month
- AHM
- Couples: $180–$210/month
- Family (1 adult + children): $185–$220/month
- Family (2 adults + children): $240–$280/month
These ranges account for optional extras like increased pharmaceutical limits or an excess option that lowers the premium. All prices are valid for policies commencing or renewing in the 2027 calendar year. You’ll pay the same monthly rate regardless of when you add the dependent — the insurer simply recalculates the remaining cover period at the family rate. There’s no “joining fee”.
Step-by-Step: How to Add a Spouse or Child to Your Existing OSHC Policy
The process is broadly similar across all insurers, but each portal has its own quirks. Before you start, gather:
- Your OSHC membership number
- The dependent’s passport biographic page (PDF or clear photo)
- The dependent’s visa grant notice (subclass 500)
- Marriage certificate, registered relationship certificate, or statutory declaration for a de facto partner
- Child’s birth certificate (for children)
- Bank details if you need to adjust direct debit
Once you submit, the insurer usually sends an updated OSHC certificate by email within 2–48 hours. Some providers allow instant certificate download from the member portal.
Bupa (myBupa portal)
- Log into your account at my.bupa.com.au.
- Under your policy tile, select “Add a family member”.
- Choose the relationship type (spouse, de facto partner, child).
- Upload the required documents. Bupa will auto‑validate the visa grant notice’s start date against your requested cover start date.
- Confirm the new premium and payment details. Bupa shows you exactly how much you’ll now pay per fortnight or month.
- Once approved, the updated certificate appears in the “Documents” tab. You can also request a hard copy.
If the dependent’s visa hasn’t been granted yet, Bupa allows you to lodge the addition with a note, but cover won’t activate until the visa is issued. Call Bupa OSHC on 134 135 if the portal blocks you.
Medibank (my.medibank.com.au)
- Log into My Medibank, navigate to “My Cover” and select your OSHC policy.
- Click “Amend membership” then “Add a dependant”.
- Fill in the online form with the dependant’s name, date of birth, and visa details.
- Upload a photo or scan of the passport and visa grant letter in a single step. Medibank’s system checks the visa status live with the Home Affairs database.
- Review the new premium. Medibank shows a breakdown of how much your payment will increase per pay cycle.
- Submit. You’ll receive an email confirmation and a link to download the new certificate immediately. For children born in Australia, you need to call instead — the online form doesn’t support newborns without a passport yet.
Allianz Care (MyHealth portal)
- Go to allianzcare.com.au/en/student/oshc-login and sign into MyHealth.
- On the “My Cover” dashboard, select “Add family member”.
- Choose “Spouse/Partner” or “Child” and enter the personal details.
- Upload the visa grant notice and relationship evidence. Allianz Care may require a certified translation if the marriage certificate isn’t in English.
- Confirm the new sum insured and payment method. The portal displays the pro‑rata adjustment for the remainder of your policy year.
- Submit. A case manager usually emails the updated certificate within one business day, though during January peak it can take up to 48 hours.
nib (nib Online Services)
- Log in at nib.com.au/oshc/login.
- From the main menu, go to “Manage my cover” and click “Add a person”.
- Fill in the dependant’s details and upload the visa grant letter. nib will prompt you to verify the relationship type with supporting documents.
- The system calculates the additional premium from the dependant’s cover start date to your policy expiry. You can choose to pay the difference upfront or increase your regular instalments.
- After approval, the certificate is available under “Policy documents”. nib’s iOS and Android app also lets you download it instantly.
AHM (online.oshc.ahm.com.au)
- Log into your OSHC account on ahm.com.au.
- Click “Modify policy” then “Add dependant”.
- Enter the dependant’s name, date of birth, and visa grant number. AHM cross‑references the visa status automatically.
- Attach the relationship proof and passport copy. AHM only supports JPG, PNG, and PDF files under 5MB.
- Review the new fortnightly premium and confirm. AHM will send a payment link if a back‑payment is required to cover an earlier arrival date.
- Download the certificate from the “Statements & certificates” section.
Adding a Newborn Baby to OSHC
When your baby is born in Australia, you don’t need to apply for a separate visa — the Department of Home Affairs considers the newborn to hold the same visa as the parents until you notify them. For OSHC, you must add the baby within 2 months of birth. If you miss this window, waiting periods apply to any condition the baby develops, and you may have to pay a late‑addition fee.
Steps for all insurers:
- Obtain your baby’s Birth Certificate from the state or territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. A hospital birth record is not enough.
- Apply for your baby’s passport (if you need one for travel) — but OSHC insurers accept the birth certificate alone while the passport is pending.
- Contact your insurer directly by phone or through a dedicated “newborn” form in the portal. Do not use the standard “Add a child” flow, which may require a visa grant number.
- Provide the birth certificate and a short cover letter
